Hi Chaps,

Has anyone got any recommendations (or warnings) about ADSL ISPs just now?

My olds are finally moving into this century and getting Broadband.
I am on cable so have no clue about what's good/bad in the ADSL world.

I imagine they will just want a basic service and won't be downloading tons of stuff.

They don't have Sky so I guess that's out and their mobiles are on Orange but I'm sure I've heard bad things about Orange BB.

Thanks all :)

I never miss an opportunity to warn people away from Orange. They are technically and administratively inept and incompetent. I changed to O2 last year - it was like a breath of fresh air.
Well worth looking at O2's mobile phone / Broadband bundle too - either with a PAYG or contract. I only pay £7.50 / month for broadband as long as I top up my PAYG phone with £10 / quarter.

Talk Talk here - £20.99 for 8 meg line+free phonecalls 24/7+line rental. Been very reliable so far.

I must admit that O2 looks favourite as they can get the LLU on their exchange.

So in effect you are paying £10 per quarter to save £5 per month, a good deal.

I just need to convince them that just because they've been on BT's 56k for eons doesn't mean that they should go with BT for ADSL.

No connection fee either with O2 and I will have to introduce them to Quidco where you can get £50 cashback just now when signing up to O2 BB.

Cheers,

OK I'm now looking for any non-LLU ISP recommendations please as I'm moving soon to the sticks.

I see Plusnet supposedly prioritise gaming traffic and have iRacing on their list that it's set up for.

I don't do much downloading otherwise (does iRacing actually use that much bandwidth for a couple of races a week? ).

Performance should be similar when they are all going over BT's kit should it not? I should be within a mile of the exchange so 6meg is the estimated (yeah right) speed.

Cheers :) :asleep:

We were on Plusnet until BT bought them and the service went to hell after that.

My above comment still holds good although we are on a LLU exchange and only 400 metres from it. Nevar had another ISP so cant comment, although i have a few friends who swear by Nildram for gaming.

No problems here with Sky, get 9-10 meg most of the time.

don't touch Nildram/Tiscali/TalkTalk, they're throttling bandwidth and it's killing people's connections to the iRacing servers (or it was, I don't know if it is still going on because all the people effected have gone to BE and had no more issues).
Welcome to the real world, for all their faults, Virgin did supply rock solid broadband, you're gonna miss them ;)

See the Sudden Poor connection woes thread in the iRacing forum for details.

I think BE is only available on LLU so it looks like Newnet and Zen have their noses in front just now.

I was with Nildram for 5 years, till December just gone, I went to BE Internet, and its been brillant, no disconnects, fast connection, instead of 8meg now up to 24meg, im getting 18meg where I am. Uploads are faster, only downside, no email address or webspace, but I have burtoner.com anyways.
